I played a heck of a session recently. I bought in a $5 min table with $100 and kept hitting numbers. On my first roll, I rolled 26 times!!!

On every winning roll I made, I would place the red chips in my POCKET. About 1/3 during my roll, I asked the dealers for green chips in exchange for the mountain of red chips in my pocket.....they informed me they will color me up later. I kept rolling and rolling. My right pants pocket was full of chips, so I start putting money in my left pocket.

2/3 during my roll..I asked again for GREEN chips (change), they then told me they cannot color me up unless I am cashing out.

To make a long story short....I ran that $100 to about $250......then lost ALL of it when the table turned cold....the dealers NEVER did give me ANY change in green chips... Is this normal? The only reason I wanted green chips is so I would be LESS likely to put that money at risk again!

When a dealer at my local table sees that I am getting too many whites,  he will start offering me 15 for 1.  That means he will pay me 3 reds for my $14 win if I drop him a white.  I would guess they would do something similar if they saw you were getting too many reds.  After all, they don't want to hold up the game while they get their chip piles restocked.
Maybe if you would leave your reds in the chip rack so they can see how many you have.  I understand maybe you kept them in your pockets to keep from spending them.  I usually move the reds, $50 at a time, to the back row of my chip rack, separating each 5 chips with a white so I can keep track easily.

Having said that, I have seen a refusal to color someone up until they were cashing in, on several occasions.  I'm not sure why...except that the crew usually has enough to do on a busy table without having to color someone up every 10 minutes.

Thats a great story, Jrock.

Different Houses have different rules for their dealers to abide by.  It sounds like this was a House Rule rather than a lazy dealer or poor service. I could see that if the players wanted to Color Up their Rail holdings every 5 minutes, it would slow the game down. For sure, the dealers are very aware of whats in your rail and will pay out denominations that make sense for what you are holding. Now if you had kept all those reds in your rail, they likely would have paid you in greens. They dont know what in your pockets  Wink

During the game the dealer will color up your single win to the next larger chip so you will be tempted to bet that chip.  Six reds to one green.
During the game they will not color you up because it will slow the game down(number of rolls) and so you will not be tempted to put larger chips in your pocket.
This is what I have experienced.
